In case you are not also familiar with it, Wiki is a internet web page that can be built by lots of authors together. That’s its most basic definition. The word “wiki” comes from Hawaiian “rapid.” Wikipedia is the world’s greatest known wiki but, as crucial as it is, it barely scratches the surface of the wiki applications on and off the World wide web.
Let’s clear up a semantic point: a “wiki” refers each to a web site and the application that makes the net web site probable. And the explanation I say “on and off the World wide web” for the reason that there are several higher-tech firms about the world today who are creating their personal wiki web sites hosted on their own servers, which can or can’t be reached by means of the World-wide-web. Some wikis are for the exclusive use of membership groups.
The power of a wiki is the way it allows many authors pool their expertise and experiences and construct up a know-how base much quicker than a single author could ever do it. Just look at how Wikipedia has replaced numerous other regular paper-based encyclopedias, specifically for the under-30 generation.
The explanation why you ought to spend focus to wikis and understand far more about them is mainly because high-tech corporations have began to shift their documentation load to wikis where not only technical writers but engineers, field technicians, high-quality handle engineers, managers, and even clients and finish-customers can also participate in information creation. The on the web support application creator Quadralay is a single such business that opened up its know-how base to its finish-customers by means of a corporate wiki. In such a new atmosphere, technical communicators shoulder the editing and facilitation roles as properly.
Be the initial 1 in your company to learn as significantly as you can about wikis. How a lot of varieties are there? How must 1 pick the proper wiki for the appropriate job? How to set Hidden wiki up? How to configure it? How to create for a wiki? Develop your personal writing guidelines and be in front of this critical technological wave. The future belongs to the “fast” and the “wiki.”
